The National Co-ordinator Protect and Prepare (NCPP) is aware of an incident that has taken place in Liege, Belgium that occurred at about 10.30 am local time today, Tuesday 29th May 2018.
Reports indicate that a male attacked two police officers with a knife, then took one of their firearms before shooting both officers. A third person who was in a motor vehicle nearby was also shot during the incident. The attacker apparently took a person hostage in a nearby school before being shot by police. At this time, whilst there are indications that this could be terrorist related, the motive behind the incident has not been confirmed by authorities. Counter Terrorism Policing are monitoring the incident, and if appropriate, will provide further information through CSSC.
Crowded Places Advice from the NCPP
The UK faces a real threat from terrorism and crowded places remain an attractive target. Crowded places include shopping centres, sports stadia, bars, pubs and clubs which are easily accessible to the public and attractive to terrorists. Guidance has been written to help those charged with security at crowded places mitigate the threat and help make the UK less vulnerable to an attack.
