Championing Early Careers: Apprentice Case Study

BAE Systems’ skilled workforce plays a vital role in defending international security, and supporting the UK’s armed forces and security services.

This year, BAE Systems in Rochester is offering more young people than ever the opportunity for exciting long-term careers, with more than 90 roles available for apprentices, undergraduates and graduates.

But the application window for apprenticeships closes at the end of February, so don’t delay.

Robert, a former apprentice and current hardware technician at BAE Systems in Rochester, has shared some insights into his journey so far, and how the company is supporting his future career development.

After completing my technical apprenticeship in 2021, I got to choose the department I went into – obsolescence. Since then I’ve been given the responsibility of training new apprentices, as well as presenting to a customer in-person, which was exciting and successful!

I was previously an ‘Apprentice of the Year’ finalist and although I didn’t win, I’m so grateful to have been nominated. It motivated me to continue to do my best and support others to do their best.

Last year, my team won the ‘Pride of Rochester Team Award 2023’ for our continued support to the company, professionalism and technical excellence, which was an amazing achievement and one I am honoured to be a part of.

I feel lucky that BAE Systems are sponsoring me to study for my bachelor’s in electrical and electronic engineering at university. I spend one day on campus each week and I’m really enjoying it. I’m looking forward to applying my learning to work into the future.
