Breathing New Life Into A Broken Web Portal

For those who don’t know us, we are Groves Solutions – a small family tech consultancy based in beautiful Deal. We specialise in analysing Customer’s workflows and systems and developing or adapting new systems which save time and money. We also develop small electronic products and write software to integrate with these, but that’s a story for another day…

We have met many lovely and interesting people at Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce Networking Events, but we want to tell the story of a Customer we met at the Kent University get-together earlier this year. They have a web-based database system which allows users to check their registration details and track their progress through activities. This system is crucial for the business as a complex trust model is built around its presence.

Their existing system had been created by a student and was, to say the least, very creaky and had stopped working completely last year. Our Customer had been desperately trying to find someone to fix the system – this is often challenging. Most software developers have a favourite framework they use for this type of project and will insist on developing something using a familiar technology stack. Our Customer has strong reasons for wanting to keep a major part of the system the same.

Happily, we love a challenge like this! We developed a working system around that core requirement and made new web pages which looked almost the same as the old ones, eliminating the need for additional reference material. Our new software (curiously, exactly 6,666 lines of code!) is modern, scalable, and properly commented which means it can be maintained by anyone.
