Turner Contemporary is transforming the relationship between high quality art and audiences in Kent, across the UK and internationally. Through our ambitious and unusual approach we are redefining the way people enjoy creativity. We engage audiences with integrity, using conversations and dialogue. In doing this, we challenge traditional gallery practice and insist on radical openness and accessibility.
We work with many partners including Tate, Southeastern, Arts Council England, Visit Kent, Kent County Council, Thanet District Council and Dreamland, as well as a strong network of national and international partners. By attracting cultural tourists, we are creating economic success in an area that has suffered chronic decline. We offer innovative cultural experiences that stimulate the local creative economy, create jobs and opportunities, attract new visitors and drive regeneration.
Since opening in 2011, we have welcomed more than 3.4 million visits. Today our work attracts over 400,000 visits each year through exhibitions, talks, workshops, discovery projects, training and development programmes. We have contributed over £70 million, both directly and indirectly, to the local economy and led to direct and indirect employment of 164 full-time equivalent jobs. Our success has fostered a creative economy not only in Margate, but more widely in Kent, along with other leading organisations.
We stand at an exciting moment. As we approach 2021, the gallery’s 10th anniversary, we have developed an ambitious and exciting programme of exhibitions, events and engagement activities. This has included hosting the prestigious and internationally renowned Turner Prize 2019, which has significantly increased our visibility and profile.
Our aspiration is to work with partners across Kent who share our passion for art and creativity during our 10th anniversary year.
