Kent Invicta Chamber Of Commerce Welcomes Support For Lower Thames Crossing
The Chancellor’s endorsement of the Lower Thames Crossing brings crucial certainty to the long-awaited infrastructure project and has been welcomed by Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce.
Having advocated hard for the Lower Thames Crossing for more than a decade, Kent Invicta sees it as a vital piece of infrastructure to unlock growth for Kent, Medway and Essex by significantly enhancing the area’s connectivity to overseas markets and rest of the UK.
In her latest statement, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said that the Government is to explore the option of privately financing the delivery of the Lower Thames Crossing with the planning application, known as a Development Consent Order, due to be determined by 23rd May this year. The team behind the project is ready to start work, with its focus being on developing the UK’s greenest road to drive out carbon, restore nature and improve the benefits for the local community.
The Lower Thames Crossing, earmarked to link Gravesham and Tilbury, will alleviate congestion on the existing Dartford Crossing, improve journey times for businesses and commuters alike, and unlock new economic opportunities for the area. The project’s advancement represents a significant step forward in addressing longstanding transportation challenges and promoting regional development.
The Lower Thames Crossing is expected to bolster export and inward investment by providing more efficient transportation links to major ports and markets. Enhanced connectivity will facilitate smoother logistics and reduce transit times, making the region more attractive to international investors and businesses. This improved infrastructure will not only support local enterprises in reaching global customers but also attract foreign companies looking to establish operations in the UK, further stimulating economic growth and development.
Tudor Price, Chief Executive of Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, expressed his enthusiasm for the Chancellor’s backing, saying: “We welcome the certainty that the Chancellor’s support brings to the Lower Thames Crossing project. This crossing is crucial for improving connectivity and supporting the local economy. The successful completion of this project will not only benefit Kent and Medway but also have a profound positive impact on the overall UK economy.”
The investment will also significantly enhance the local visitor economy. Improved connectivity and reduced congestion will make it easier for tourists to access the rich cultural and historical attractions of Kent and Medway, boosting local businesses and contributing to the vibrancy and economic vitality of the region.
Tudor Price added: “Through continued collaboration between government bodies, businesses, and stakeholders we can ensure the timely and efficient delivery of the Lower Thames Crossing. By working together, the region can harness the full potential of this transformative project, fostering sustainable economic growth and enhancing business opportunities and competitiveness alike.”
