Chamber Welcomes Secretary Of State’s Decision To Refuse Northfleet Harbourside Planning Application

Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the decision by the Secretary of State to refuse the proposed Northfleet Harbourside development, bringing to an end a prolonged period of uncertainty for the businesses operating on the site and across the wider Thames Estuary economy.

The Chamber has consistently argued that, while the need for new homes and economic growth is recognised, the proposed development posed a significant threat to more than 40 businesses located within the Northfleet Harbourside area and the hundreds of people they employ. Many of these businesses depend on direct access to the River Thames and the safeguarded wharf facilities that are critical to their operations.

“We welcome the Secretary of State’s decision to refuse the Northfleet Harbourside planning application. This is the right outcome for the many businesses that have faced years of uncertainty over their future and for the wider strategic importance of the Thames Estuary as a centre for industry, logistics and construction materials.”

“Throughout this process, the Chamber has supported growth and the delivery of new homes, but we have consistently maintained that development should not come at the expense of established businesses that contribute significantly to the local and regional economy. The loss of one of the Thames’ remaining safeguarded wharfs and the displacement of successful businesses would have had far-reaching consequences for jobs, investment and supply chains across Kent and beyond.”
