The January 2027 Switch-Off Is Coming – Is Your Business Ready?
The January 2027 Switch-Off Is Coming – Is Your Business Ready?
The way UK businesses make and receive telephone calls is changing.
As we move towards January 2027, businesses still relying on traditional telephone services need to make sure they are prepared for the move away from the old copper-based telephone network.
For many businesses, their telephone number remains one of the most important ways customers get in touch. The switch-off doesn’t mean you have to lose your existing business numbers, but it does mean older telephone services will need to move to modern, internet-based alternatives.
What does the switch-off mean for your business?
For decades, traditional telephone services have relied on the UK’s copper telephone network. This is now being replaced by modern digital connectivity, with telephone calls increasingly delivered using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
Instead of relying on a traditional telephone line, calls can be delivered over an internet connection and answered using a desk phone, computer or mobile app.
Businesses that have already moved to a hosted telephone system may have very little to do. However, organisations still using traditional telephone lines should start reviewing their services now rather than waiting until the final stages of the migration.
It’s also important to remember that telephone lines aren’t always used just for voice calls. Businesses should check whether they have alarms, door-entry systems, lift emergency phones, payment terminals, fax machines or other equipment connected to traditional telephone lines.
Take your business number with you
One of the biggest advantages of moving to a modern hosted telephone system is flexibility.
Your team no longer needs to be sitting next to a desk phone to make and receive business calls. Using a mobile app, employees can make and receive calls using their business telephone number directly from their mobile, helping them stay connected whether they’re in the office, working from home or out visiting customers.
And for businesses where recording conversations is important, mobile business calls can even be recorded.
This means businesses can benefit from call recording across mobile working as well as traditional office-based calls, helping with areas such as training, customer service, compliance and reviewing important conversations.
It also means employees don’t necessarily need a second mobile phone just to keep their business and personal calling separate.
Don’t forget your 999 emergency address
Modern cloud telephone systems give businesses much greater flexibility. Employees can work from the office, another branch, from home or on the move while still using their business telephone service.
However, that flexibility makes it particularly important to ensure the emergency services address associated with your telephone service is accurate and kept up to date.
Businesses moving to cloud communications should therefore include their 999 emergency address information as part of their migration planning.
More than just replacing an old telephone line
The January switch-off isn’t simply about replacing one type of telephone line with another. It’s also an opportunity to look at how your business communicates.
Modern hosted telephone systems can provide smaller businesses with features that were previously associated with much larger organisations, including:
- Mobile and desktop apps
- Business calls from your mobile using your business number
- Mobile call recording
- Call routing
- Auto attendants and IVRs
- Voicemail-to-email
- Call recording
- Call reporting and analytics
- Remote and hybrid working
- Multiple locations connected through one system
For businesses operating from several locations, a hosted system can bring different sites together under a single communications platform, helping staff work from almost anywhere while maintaining a professional and consistent experience for customers.
Start preparing now
January 2027 may still seem some distance away, but businesses shouldn’t leave their preparations until the last minute.
A good starting point is to identify every telephone line within your organisation and establish exactly what it is being used for. Once you know what you have, you can determine what needs to change and plan the migration with minimal disruption.
