Back to School: What Working in Education Taught Me

Ask any facilities manager who works in education—academy, independent, or SEN—they will all tell you the same thing: schools can be brutal. Tight deadlines, even tighter budgets, pleasing multiple stakeholders, and all while keeping an eye on statutory compliance and health and safety law.

Galvanize Contracts Ltd. started in 2015 and most of our early clients were educational establishments, including King Alfred School and Oak Lodge School, LSA & ELAM.

In hindsight, I might have started a bit more softly, but needs must, and I wanted to make Galvanize a success story. We focused on our clients’ needs and worked hand-in-glove with them to value-engineer the best solutions. Meticulous planning and organization were essential. There could be no flexibility or overrun. Every project had to be delivered on time, and this meant working during school holidays with no contingency.

By bringing a foundational philosophy of trust, team commitment, and unwavering client focus, we strive to realize our clients’ visions and exceed expectations. Our portfolio of clients has grown to include Davies Turner, Pentagon Freight, The Sarmatian’s Purse and also  restaurants, and Coffee shops Burrito Joe and Enfield Coffee, and assisted living properties.

Galvanize Contracts recognised the collaborative nature of success early on, and that has been key to our success. The tight parameters of working with schools became so ingrained in the way we do things that we apply the same care and consideration to all our clients. I didn’t go back to school as a contractor expecting to learn as much as I did. A second education is always an advantage.
