Heatwave Economics: When The Weather Turns Up, So Can Your Costs

11th August 2026
Oscar Galloni

The UK is bracing for another burst of extreme heat, with temperatures expected to push towards the mid-30s in parts of the country.

For most of us, that means warm offices, busy fans, slower trains, and the heroic British tradition of saying “it’s too hot” after waiting eleven months for sunshine.

But for businesses, hot weather can bring more than discomfort. It can disrupt supply chains, affect delivery timings, increase energy usage, delay operations and put extra pressure on planning.

The same is true of currency markets.

They can look calm one minute, then suddenly move when inflation data, central bank expectations, global politics or economic figures shift sentiment.

FX markets this week

The US dollar remains in focus after softer US jobs data recently pushed it towards lower levels. Markets are now watching US inflation figures closely, as these could influence expectations around the Federal Reserve’s next move.

Sterling has held support against the euro, but Thursday’s UK GDP figures will be an important test. Stronger growth could help the pound, while weaker data may put pressure back on GBP.

The euro has strengthened recently, but Eurozone inflation and GDP data will help determine whether that momentum continues.

The Japanese yen also remains worth watching, following recent sharp moves and ongoing concerns around intervention.

Key dates to watch

  • Wednesday: US CPI, Eurozone CPI and Japan PPI
  • Thursday: UK GDP, UK trade and production data, US PPI and jobless claims
  • Friday: Eurozone GDP, US retail sales and Michigan consumer sentiment

Why this matters for Chamber members

For businesses trading internationally, exchange rates are part of the cost base.

They can affect:

  • Overseas supplier payments
  • Import and export pricing
  • Stock and equipment purchases
  • Profit margins
  • Cash flow forecasting
  • Larger personal transfers

A small change in GBP/EUR, GBP/USD or USD/JPY can make a noticeable difference, particularly where payments are regular, high-value or time-sensitive.

A quick FX check can help

Just as businesses plan ahead for weather disruption, staffing pressure or seasonal demand, it can also be useful to review upcoming currency requirements before key market events.

That may mean checking a live rate, benchmarking against your current provider, discussing a market order, or simply understanding what data could affect your next payment.

If you have upcoming international payments, feel free to contact me for preferential exchange rates moving forward.

I am happy to provide a quick quote, review your current FX setup, or have a straightforward conversation around EUR, USD, JPY or wider currency requirements.

No drama, no jargon – just a sensible check before the market gets hotter than the office.
