The Paula Carr Diabetes Trust Centre, William Harvey Hospital, Kennington Road, Willesborough, Ashford, Kent. TN24 0LZ

The principal aim of the Paula Carr Diabetes Trust is to support patients in Kent and Medway who are living with diabetes. This support is provided in many different ways.

For patients – A range of educational resources has been developed for patients to help them manage their diabetes from day to day. This includes a free patient information pack, designed for people who have been recently diagnosed with diabetes, which is available free to all patients in the Kent and Medway area from your GP surgery.

Requests for financial support for patients are usually referred to the Trust by the patient’s healthcare team (for example GP, diabetic specialist nurse, podiatrist or paediatric dietician).

There are also specialist teams who care for children with diabetes . The charity works closely with the The Kent & Medway Diabetes Paediatric Group helping to fund events ,and days out which are great ways of bringing the children with Type 1 diabetes together.

With 537 million adults and 1.1 million children across the globe living with diabetes, there is a significant demand for healthcare professionals to treat and manage this disease. The charity has supported the  diabetes nurses in Kent by funding courses to enable them to extend their knowledge and help our patients giving them the best care possible.

We are also involved with other projects with organisations/ businesses outside the hospital such as –

The Re-Set Diabetes Project – this is a collaboration between Lighthouse on The Marsh and the Paula Carr Diabetes Trust which aims to improve clinical outcomes for diabetics by focussing on the role that mental health plays in physical wellness.

The Trust has also teamed up with Specialist Podiatrist Jo Shapter at East Kent Footcare based in Ashford and Folkestone  to  offer vital foot care assessments to diabetic patients in East Kent. With a focus on prevention and early intervention they focus on arterial health and protective sensation checks to ensure your feet are well cared for. By detecting issues early, they can help prevent severe complications and promote better healing.
