Businesses have a legal duty to ensure their premises are safe for everyone who uses or visits them. If you own, run or are a responsible person for a business, Kent Fire and Rescue Service is here to offer you help and advice on understanding your responsibilities and how to take precautions, minimise the risk and meet the legal requirements. This legal duty applies to both the employed and self-employed.

Part of this legal duty is to carry out a fire risk assessment and review it regularly. The law which governs this is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, as amended, sometimes simply known as the fire safety order (FSO).

A Fire Risk Assessment:

  • Identifies possible fire hazards and people who may be at risk.
  • Evaluates the risks and what can be done to remove or reduce them.
  • Record your findings, prepare an emergency plan, and provide training.
  • Review and update the fire risk assessments regularly.

It is important for businesses to know and understand their legal responsibilities in relation to fire safety and their premises, and what is required. From Fire Risk Assessments and event fire safety to safer kitchen ventilation and starting a new business, you’ll find guidance and advice on our website to help your business stay safe.

Our team is here to help you understand your regulatory duties, provide support and answer any questions you may have.
