Regional and Global Impact

Our research, students, graduates and partnerships all contribute towards the prosperity of the regional economy and communities. Our students volunteer for an average of 15,000 hours a year. Many stay in the area after graduation, reinvesting their skills and knowledge, in public services and businesses. We also engage with the community through our outreach activity in schools.

Our education, research and partnerships are making a significant difference in society, helping to shape new ideas, skills and opportunities. Thousands of our graduates are working in the UK economy, teaching in schools, providing health and social care in the community, helping businesses to flourish and injecting talent into creative industries.

Responsive

We are constantly responding to local and regional societal and economic needs, providing more teachers, health workers, nurses and police officers for example. This will continue well into the future. Our new engineering courses will help to address the sector’s skill shortage and the new joint medical school will help the region to recruit and retain more doctors. Our new range of digital and creative arts courses are responding to the rapidly changing skills requirements in the sector  and we are also working closely with employers to develop a range of apprenticeships.

Engineering, Design, Growth and Enterprise (EDGE) Hub

Alongside our ambitious £150m plans to transform our main campus, we have exciting plans to expand teaching and research in engineering. We are inspiring a new generation of engineers with courses that respond to real-world opportunities and nurture creativity and a talent for problem-solving. Employers and industry leaders are working with us to develop a range of dynamic courses, research opportunities and new facilities – including a new building for 2020 on the main Canterbury site, and regional centres of excellence co-located with engineering and technology businesses. The new Kent and Medway Engineering, Design, Growth and Enterprise Hub will have a significant impact on the regional economy,

New Medical School

The new Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) with the University of Kent opens in 2020. The school will become a beacon for first-class medical education and research, attracting the most talented aspiring doctors from within the local community and beyond. Our aim is to retain skilled medical professionals within the region’s healthcare system, seek innovative solutions to improve healthcare in the region and collaborate to inspire the next generation of doctors.
