Abigail’s Footsteps is a Medway based baby loss charity, providing support and counselling for bereaved parents and families as well as specialist bereavement training for midwives and healthcare professionals.

Since 2010, we have worked to improve the way bereaved parents are cared for by hospitals and to better educate midwives on how to care for grieving parents. Sadly, stillbirths and neonatal deaths occur daily, yet many hospitals are not equipped to deal with the parental care required, they have inadequate facilities and their staff receive little to no bereavement training.

By working with medical professionals to understand the issues and seek solutions our charity has helped many families.  One of our greatest contributions as a charity has been the creation and funding of the Abi cooling cot which allows parents valuable additional time to make memories with their baby before saying goodbye.  These cots are made by The Bond Group in Sheerness, and distributed to hospitals nationwide wherever there is a need and as funding allows.

The Abi cooling cot looks beautiful and is very easy to use for maternity staff, and it is very easy to move around the room. It has become a vital piece of equipment for our unit and we are so grateful to be able to offer parents precious time and space to be with their babies.

Services

  • 1) Improve bereavement training for health care professionals; to improve the bereavement training that health care professionals and care staff receive and to improve the quality of supportive information that families receive if their family suffers a stillbirth.
  • 2) Provide vital equipment; to provide the necessary equipment in each maternity unit to preserve a stillborn baby until at least the day after the mother’s discharge from hospital.
  • 3) Ensure that bereavement suites are located away from the main maternity ward; by making the best use of hospital architecture and layout; fund sensitively designed delivery rooms located away from maternity wards in each on Britain’s maternity units.
