Skills For Life – The Benefit Of Upskilling For SMEs In The South East
It is estimated that 94% of today’s workforce lacks the full set of skills they’ll need to perform well in their jobs in 2030 (McKinsey). However, promisingly, a new poll of SMEs commissioned by the Skills for Life campaign, has found 69% of SMEs in England and the same per cent in the South East are planning to invest in upskilling their workforce. This suggests that UK businesses are aware of this challenge – but have a strong willingness to address this.
The benefits of upskilling are vast for an employer. It helps employees to feel empowered as they’re provided with more skills to help them thrive professionally and do their jobs to a better degree. This boosts levels of individual satisfaction, with employees feeling like they matter, which in turn increases morale and productivity within a business.
There is also a positive knock-on economic effect, as businesses can function better and plan into the long-term, enabling them to build and maintain a thriving and productive business.
From apprenticeships to T Level industry placements and traineeships – there is a whole host of government-supported training and employment schemes that can help you gain access to skilled workers and upskill existing employees.
The Skills for Life campaign aims to help SMEs understand the schemes available to them, including:
- Apprenticeships
- T Levels: industry placements
- Skills Bootcamps
- Multiply numeracy courses
- Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs)
Businesses that are considering hiring employees can access a range of government training and employment schemes offering work experience or upskilling existing staff, some of which offer financial incentives.
