Ashford Borough Council Cabinet acknowledges investment in celebratory year

Ashford is determined to put on a party in 2012 and everyone is invited, with a day’s free parking in Tenterden and Ashford over the June bank holiday weekend.

At last night’s Cabinet meeting Ashford Borough Council’s Cabinet members reviewed the way that the town’s residents and groups have embraced the forthcoming Jubilee and Olympic Torch Relay events.

Back in October the Cabinet approved proposals to fund projects totalling £13,500. Last night Councillors heard how these events have developed and will be meaningful ways for the borough to mark the Jubilee and to celebrate community participation.

With 11 street parties approved by Kent Highways, a further 21 village and parish events taking place across the borough, and the special Create Music festival, there are plenty of opportunities for residents and tourists to enjoy the celebrations in Ashford.

Last night it was also announced that there will be free parking in all of the Council-owned car parks in Tenterden on Sunday 3rd June, and in Ashford on Monday 4th June to encourage people to join in with the activities that have been arranged.

With July also seeing the Olympic Torch Relay come to the town on 18th and 19th, plans are in place to enable as many people as possible to make the most of their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Olympic Torch.

Councillors also set the agenda for future meetings by deciding that key financial monitoring reports will be presented to them in June, September, December and March, and also deciding on when reports on homelessness prevention and the Conningbrook Lakes Country Park will be heard.

Councillor Peter Wood, Leader of Ashford Borough Council, said: “We are delighted that Ashford has a broad range of events in store for residents and visitors alike to come and celebrate the Jubilee and the Olympic Torch Relay right here. We truly hope that as many people as possible grasp Ashford’s moment to shine.”
