Councils will Gain Control over Sunday Trading

Posted on Tuesday 16th February, 2016 by

Local authorities in England and Wales will have the power to create zones with extended opening hours on Sundays, Business Secretary Sajid Javid has announced during the second reading of the Enterprise Bill. The devolution of Sunday trading rules is expected to give a boost to local high-street traders competing with online retailers.

Shop workers in larger stores will have the right to opt out of working on Sundays on religious grounds or for family reasons. The notice period they are required to give to their employers will be reduced from three months to one month and shop owners will have a duty to inform their workers of these rights.
